The International Journal of Mental Health & Addiction (IJMA) Journal offers an Internet- and print-based forum for up-to-date information and developments in mental health and addiction-related research, policy, phenomenology, literature, and treatment. Through publishing high quality peer-reviewed articles, it is our aim to establish and lead an international debate on mental health and addiction, and to help make sense of how issues of mental health and addiction affect individuals and communities.

Papers may be submitted under one of the following categories:

  • Letters to the editor
  • Regular articles
  • Letters of law
  • Brief reports
  • Clinical case studies
  • Commentaries
  • Book reviews
  • News updates (research, education and clinical)

Beginning in 2006, the International Journal of Mental Health & Addiction will be published through Springer on a quarterly basis. We welcome submission of articles for publication in the Journal by researchers, clinicians, educators, frontline workers, other allied health professionals and community stakeholders.

All submissions must comply with the instructions below and will be reviewed by the Journal's Editorial Board. Special issues will be reserved for topics chosen by the board of editors.

Submissions must be in English, 12-point Times New Roman text, double-spaced, left-justified and paginated for letter size. Papers should be no more than 6,000 words and should be accompanied by an abstract of 100 to 150 words. Sexist or racist language should not be used. Colloquial or highly-specialized language should be avoided whenever possible. Statistics are acceptable but must be explained in simple terms.

The full names of authors and their academic or professional affiliations should be included. The postal address, phone number, fax and email contact details should be included only for the primary author.

Do not include page numbers, headers, footers, formatted text or endnotes. Any diagrams, figures or tables must be in black and white, and only in an attachment format.

Only electronic submissions will be accepted. Please use the Microsoft Word format (.doc) and submit your paper via http://ijmh.edmgr.com.

Submissions must be formatted according to the guidelines set by the APA style. In the text, references to authors should be made in the following manner:

    Culleton (1989) suggests that
    A recent study (Dickerson, 1992)

In particular, the full names of all authors (to a maximum of five, after which the abbreviation et al. should be used) must be included the first time a work is cited. For subsequent in-text citations, only the first author of works that are authored by three or more persons should be listed.

For parenthetical references included more than one work, all works should be listed in alphabetical order and separated by a semicolon:

    General studies (Frey, 1984; Gazel, 1998)

If there are references to the same author in the same year, distinguish citations by adding suffixes (i.e., a, b, c, etc.) to the reference:

    Walker (1992a) argues that

References should be collected at the end of the paper in alphabetical order by the first author's last name, with full details of the publication, book, or journal. The name of the publication in which the article appeared or the title of the book should be italicized, as well as the volume of the work (if it appeared in a journal).

All cited references must be presented as follows:
